welcome to mov/ed

online classes for moving the way you choose

You're welcome to join us.

Join a single class to see whether mov/ed is for you

The Welcome Class is an offering to welcome newcomers to the mov/ed community—folks coming together online for a shared movement practice.

To join, I ask you to schedule a time to meet with me before attending a regular weekly class time. It'll be a chance to share any objectives you have in joining class and ask any questions you have for me.

When you come to class, I'll take a moment at the beginning to introduce you to the rest of the folks attending and welcome you into the community!

Weekly classes start at 8am on Sun and Wed mornings.
Please schedule a pre-class meet-and-greet appointment to get started!

Welcome yourself into movement

In addition to the Welcome Class and my ongoing drop-in classes, I occasionally offer the Welcome Series, a five-week introduction to building a movement habit founded in awareness (of your needs, your body, and more).

Each week will focus on a different aspect of movement through discussion and practice: breathing, mobility, balance, awareness, and choice. All together, the series is designed to give you a foundation for building or refining a regular movement practice or exercise habit, whether on your own or in group classes.

The Welcome Series is offered online via Zoom annually, either at the start of the school year or at the start of the calendar year. Attendance is limited to 8 people. Fee is pay what you choose, with a suggested range of $50-150.

If you have any questions, feel free to email me or schedule a free introductory meeting.

Build your movement habit

The Welcome Series is an introduction to building a movement habit founded in awareness. "Habit founded in awareness" might seem like an oxymoron, which is probably why many traditions refer to this habit as a practice: movement you do for your well-being (whether physical, mental, or all of it) in an intentional manner and on a regular basis. The regularity and commitment is the habit part. What you do inside that time can be filled with awareness --whether it's of how you do your movement or how you feel in it or another focus.

The Welcome Series is meant to introduce you to a few concrete topics (and accompanying actions) that can help you engage with your movement practice/habit/routine with intention. And if you're just starting to build a habit, I hope these tools will make it easier to do just that.

The principles that we'll cover together are also foundational to the way I teach my weekly classes. This series provides a good introduction to my style of teaching movement and gentle yoga.

Below is more information about each of the topics introduced in the Welcome Series. If you have questions, feel free to ask!

Breath

We'll address (and dispel!) notions of how one "should" breathe, especially during movement  or exercise, by looking at why those recommendations exist. My hope is that you take away a deeper understanding or curiosity about your breathing. For our practice portion, I'll teach a couple of approaches to breathing that you can use on your own to practice breathing consciously, if you choose.

Mobility

Mobility is about both stretch and strength, and we'll look at some of the anatomical aspects of both to help put that statement into context! Typically, we spend more time on the "stretch" side of things here, including different approaches to stretching and why you might use each. In practice, I'll invite you to observe how you experience these different kinds of stretching in a series of forms and movements that are common in my classes.

Balance

Balance is part skill and part strength. I'll cover which areas of the body need to be strong for balancing on one foot, and also share a few techniques for improving your balance from the skill side of things. In practice, I'll invite you to explore the balance element in each, whether considering balance through a skill or strength lens (or both!).

Awareness & Choice

"Awareness" in a movement practice is both individual and personal. In practice, I'll invite you to notice what you're aware of in your form, sensations, and thoughts. It's always your choice what you pay attention to, and throughout the Welcome Series, I'll create space for you to make choices throughout, while always providing an example you can follow.

why try the welcome series?

There are so many reasons! Here are just three:

  1. Learn + practice fundamentals that you can use on your own.
  2. Get an introduction to my teaching approach to decide whether you'd like to join my weekly classes
  3. Be in a community of other movers who share similar questions, frustrations, and enjoyment through movement!

pay what you choose

I offer the Welcome Class and the Welcome Series on a pay-what-you-choose basis. The form suggests a range of $10-30 for a single class and $50-150 for the 5-week series. If you're paying separately from your registration, you can use the button below.
