mov/ed welcome series

an introduction to build your movement practice

Welcome to the Welcome Series!

Next Session: Fall 2023, dates and times will be announced in summer 2023.

The Welcome Series is a five-week introduction to building a movement habit founded in awareness (of your needs, your body, and more). Below are the topics, one for each week. The hope is that this series will give you a foundation for building or continuing a regular movement practice or exercise habit, whether on your own or in group classes.

The Welcome Series is offered online via zoom twice annually, at the start of the school year and at the start of the calendar year. Attendance is limited to 8 people. Fee is pay what you choose, with a suggested range of $50-$150.

If you have any questions, feel free to email me or schedule a free introductory meeting.

Registration will open in August 2023.

If you'd like to hear about it via email, please sign up for my biweekly newsletter below!

Build your movement habit

The Welcome Series is a five-week introduction to building a movement habit founded in awareness. "Habit founded in awareness" might seem like an oxymoron, which is probably why many traditions refer to this habit as a practice: movement you do for your well-being (whether physical, mental, or all of it) in an intentional manner and on a regular basis. The regularity and commitment is the habit part. What you do inside that time can be filled with awareness --whether it's of how you do your movement or how you feel in it or another focus.

The Welcome Series is meant to introduce you to five concrete topics (and accompanying actions) that can help you engage with your movement practice/habit/routine with intention. And if you're just starting to build a habit, I hope these tools will make it easier to do just that.

The five principles that we'll cover together are also foundational to the way I teach my weekly classes. If you're curious about my Sunday online classes, this series provides a good introduction to my style of teaching movement and vinyasa yoga.

Below is more information about each of the five topics.
If you have questions, feel free to ask!

Breath

We'll address (and dispel!) notions of how one "should" breathe, especially during movement/exercise, by looking at why those recommendations exist. My hope is that you take away a deeper understanding or curiosity about your breathing. For our practice portion, I'll teach a couple of approaches to breathing that you can use on your own to practice breathing consciously, if you choose.

Stretching

We'll look at some of the anatomical aspects of stretching, different types or approaches to stretching, and when each might be useful. Included in this "stretch" category is the element of rest, which I'll address briefly. For our practice portion, I'll teach 3-5 new forms and movements in which you can observe how you experience these different kinds of stretching.

Strength

We'll look at some of the anatomical reasons for building and maintaining strong muscles and also discuss strength as a movement concept/quality and the different ways each of us might categorize what stems from strength. For our practice portion, I'll teach 3-5 new forms and movements in which you can apply your own understanding of your strength and where it comes from.

Awareness

I'll start with defining awareness in anatomical terms and discuss how you might consider "awareness" as a practice of its own or an element of all practices. For our practice portion, I'll offer forms and movements from the previous three sessions with the option to notice what you're aware of in your form, sensations, and thoughts.

Choice

We'll discuss the role of choice and agency in movement practice, starting with asking: how is it important or essential? how is it challenging? how is it fulfilling? For our practice portion, I'll offer forms and movements from the previous sessions, offering the option to focus on awareness and/or making choices.
