trauma-sensitive yoga

for social service organizations and communities
I offer Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY), an evidence-based therapeutic intervention for complex trauma and resilience-building practice for various forms of trauma and adverse experiences.

TCTSY practices are designed to empower practitioners in their movement and in their bodies. Practices are facilitated using invitational language, offering choices for each movement, and inviting awareness of internal experience.

how is trauma-sensitive (TCTSY) different from "regular" yoga?

While there are many variations on "regular" yoga, many yoga classes you would find in a studio or gym place an emphasis on achieving skill in the postures and sequences of the physical practice.

Trauma-sensitive practices shift the focus away from physical achievement and instead invite choice and internal awareness. Forms and movements are facilitated using invitational language instead of the directive commands common to exercise classes.

Some TCTSY participants find they develop or enhance their ability to feel in their bodies and recognize internal sensations, which can lead to supportive self-regulation behaviors.

who could benefit from TCTSY?

Individuals seeking treatment for trauma
TCTSY can be one option for people navigating the effects of trauma. Some people are drawn to having a movement practice that doesn't require them to push through discomfort or achieve specific physical goals. Others appreciate the way the practice invites choice and internal awareness.

Staff in high-stress, service-oriented work
Healthcare workers, mental health professionals, social service providers, teachers, and others in externally-focused service roles may be drawn to the choice-based nature of TCTSY.

This approach to movement—inviting choice-making and awareness of what you're feeling in your body—can be calming, grounding, and focusing. It can also be challenging, as increased awareness isn't always comfortable in the moment.

Many people in service roles know that self-care is important, but there isn't always structural support to reinforce that knowledge with a practice. TCTSY as an organizational offering provides a practical way to encourage self-care as part of service—learning to notice and respond to your own needs so you can show up more fully for the people you serve.
