a dance event by michael estanich

my role: production manager/lighting designer

Birdwomen was a long-form dance exploring migration, distance, and cycle that was created for the vast and concrete spaces of Knowlton Hall (Mack Scogin Merill Elam Architects). The echoing footfalls of fifteen dancers took over the building, describing its sensuous depth.

Watch an interview with the choreographer here.

My goal for the lighting was to respond to the site, adding a level of visual texture to the existing palette. The cavernous and intimate spaces alike were part of a journey for the dancers.
