A while ago I asked the dancers to bring in something “pretty” to wear in practice, leaving it up to them to determine what pretty was to them. The dancing conversation that emerged had its childish moments – exploring giddily and without much concern for “performance” this oddly new feeling of dancing in dresses (I think pretty much everyone brought a dress or skirt), even though we’ve all performed and danced in dresses dozens of times before. This was different because, as Erin said, we were improvising with all of the memories and experiences of where these particular dresses had been with us before –all places not here in the studio.
